Fog cannons for dust you cannot fence in

A MistBeam takes mains or tanker water, atomises it through a ring of stainless nozzles and throws the fog out on an axial fan — far enough to reach the tip face, the crusher mouth or the haul road from outside the working area. Airborne dust collides with the droplets, gets heavy and falls. No chemicals, no enclosure, nothing for a loader to work around.

What a fog cannon is, and when it is the right answer

Fog cannon and mist cannon are two names for the same machine, and it is the workhorse of open-air dust suppression. A high-pressure pump feeds a ring of fine nozzles set in the mouth of an axial fan; the nozzles break water into droplets in the tens of microns, and the fan carries that fog out over the working area as a cloud rather than a jet. Dust in the air runs into droplets its own size, the pair becomes too heavy to stay up, and both come down together.

That matters because the alternative — a water tanker wetting the ground — only treats dust that has already landed. A fog cannon treats the dust that is still in the air: over a tip face, off a crusher discharge, behind a dozer on an overburden dump, across a demolition frontage. It is also why one unit can cover work that would need a tanker circulating continuously, and why it is usually the cheapest way to hold a site inside its consent conditions on visible emissions and respirable dust.

It is not the answer to everything. Dust generated inside a chute, a transfer point or a silo is better handled at the source, and a fog cannon aimed into a conveyor gallery will wet the belt before it wets the dust. Tell us what you are trying to suppress and we will say plainly when a fog cannon is not the right tool.

Atomise, throw, collide, settle

A fog cannon is a simple machine doing one difficult thing: putting water droplets the same size as dust particles into the same cubic metre of air.

Atomise

A booster pump pushes water through quick-change stainless nozzles in the fan mouth. Droplet size is what the whole machine is built around — too fine and the fog never leaves the nozzle ring, too coarse and it falls before it meets anything.

Throw

The axial fan carries the fog downrange as a cloud. Airflow runs from about 2,000 m³/h on the MSC10 to 113,000 m³/h on the MSC100, and that number, not pressure, is what buys distance.

Collide

Droplets and dust particles of similar size collide instead of sliding past one another. This is where the size discipline pays: a coarse spray passes straight through a dust cloud and wets the ground under it.

Settle

The combined mass falls out of the air within the treated volume. Nothing is added to the water, so the dust settles where it would have settled anyway — it just does it in seconds rather than drifting to the boundary.

Throw is the number to start from, and it is always a band — a fog cannon reaches its top figure in still air and less into a headwind. Measure from where you can safely park the machine to the far edge of the dust, and pick the model whose band covers it.

Every model rotates 360° under power and carries a remote control and a water cut-off valve; fixed-direction versions are available where rotation is not wanted, and a lifting bracket is fitted from the MSC30 up. How the area figure works: a cannon sited at the edge of an area and swept through half a circle covers about π × R² ÷ 2, and R here is the bottom of each model's throw band, not the top — the top is the windless figure. That is deliberately the cautious end. It is geometry and a siting convention rather than a coverage specification: wind, the shape of the area and where you can stand the machine all move it, so the final layout is confirmed against your site plan.

Four ways a MistBeam arrives on site

The cannon is the same machine in all four. What changes is what carries it, what feeds it water and where its power comes from — and that is decided by the site, not by the dust. A crusher that never moves and a tip face that moves every week are two different answers.

Configuration 01

Standalone

The cannon and its pump skid alone, bolted down and fed from the site's own water and power. It can sit on the ground, on a fabricated stand, or up on an elevated structure — a gantry, a silo walkway, a bund or the roof of a plant building — which is how you get fog over a discharge point rather than under it. The right answer where the dust source does not move: a crusher, a wagon tippler, a transfer house, a stockpile that is always in the same place.

Configuration 02

The cannon and an onboard water tank on a towable four-wheel chassis, drawing power from a site supply or a nearby distribution board. Tow it to the face behind a pickup, park it, plug it in. The tank means it does not have to stand next to a hydrant, so it can follow the work rather than the pipework — the usual answer for tip faces, haul-road sections and phased construction.

Configuration 03

The same trolley with a generator set alongside the tank, so the unit owes the site nothing at all — no cable, no hydrant, no standing plant. This is what goes to an opencast bench, a greenfield earthworks job or a remote borrow area, and it is the configuration most often taken on hire, because it can be dropped anywhere a truck can reach and started the same hour.

Configuration 04

Truck-mounted

The cannon mounted on a water tanker, turning a vehicle you may already run into a dust suppression unit that refills itself. Because the truck carries a pump and a full-pressure water system anyway, it can also carry a road washer for wetting and cleaning haul roads and paved surfaces, and a water cannon for washing down plant, structures and spillage — three jobs off one chassis. Tank size follows the chassis you provide, so the coverage and the run time are yours to set.

Everything it needs, on four wheels

Water tank, booster pump, generator and cannon on one towable chassis. Nothing to trench, nothing to connect, and nothing left behind when the face moves on — which is why this is the unit that goes out on hire and the one that ends up parked wherever the week's work is.

One chassis, three jobs

Mounted on a water tanker the cannon refills itself and goes wherever the truck goes. The same tank and pump will also drive a road washer for haul roads and paved areas, and a water cannon for washing down plant, structures and spillage — so a vehicle that would otherwise only damp the ground earns its keep three ways.

Where they go

The dust sources a fog cannon is built for

All of these have one thing in common: the dust is already airborne and outdoors, and there is nothing to put a hood over.

Opencast mining and quarrying

Tip faces and dump points, shovel and loader faces, drilling, haul roads and crusher feed. The classic case for a trolley unit with its own generator — the dust moves as the bench moves.

Crushing and screening plant

Crusher mouths, discharge conveyors, screen decks and product stockpiles. A standalone unit on a stand aimed across the discharge holds the plume down without wetting the product.

Coal handling and stockyards

Coal yards, wagon tipplers, stacker-reclaimers and open stockpiles at power stations, ports and washeries. Suppressing coal dust also takes the risk of a stockpile fire down, which is often the argument that gets the budget signed.

Cement and bulk materials

Limestone and clinker yards, raw-material handling, tipping halls and bulk loading bays. Fine, light dust that travels a long way is exactly what a fog cloud is good at catching.

Construction and demolition

Demolition frontages, excavation and earthworks, site haul roads, concrete cutting and crushing of arisings. Increasingly the condition on the planning consent rather than a nice-to-have.

Ports, sidings and waste

Ship loading and unloading, rail sidings and tipping points, landfill faces, RDF and materials-recovery yards. A truck-mounted unit suits these because the dust source moves through the day.

Before you buy one

Six things that decide whether it works on your site

A fog cannon is not difficult to own, but it is easy to site badly. These are the questions we ask before we quote, and they are worth answering before you talk to anyone.

Wind

Which way does it blow, and how hard

Every throw figure on this page is stated for still air, and that is not a disclaimer — it is the design input. A crosswind shortens the reach and moves the cloud; a headwind can halve it.

  • Site the machine upwind of the dust, not beside it
  • 360° powered rotation exists so the operator can follow the wind, not just sweep
  • Where the wind reverses through the day, plan for two positions rather than one bigger machine
Water

How much, how clean, and how it gets there

Fine nozzles are unforgiving about solids. Most of the service calls on any fog cannon anywhere trace back to water that was never filtered.

  • Filter ahead of the pump; nozzles are quick-change for when you do not
  • Recycled or settled site water can be used — have it tested first
  • Where a hydrant cannot reach, the tank configurations exist for exactly that
Power

Site supply, or bring your own

Fan and pump ratings on the table above are what you are sizing for. The step from the MSC50 up is significant, and is usually what pushes a site towards the generator configuration.

  • Standalone and plain trolley units take a site supply
  • The generator trolley owes the site nothing — the usual choice for remote and phased work

Height

Get above the dust, not level with it

Fog falls. A machine at ground level throwing at a discharge point three storeys up is fighting itself, and this is the single most common siting mistake we see.

Access

Can it get to the spot, and back off it

The bigger models are a serious weight on an unmade surface, and a machine that cannot be recovered from a soft bench in the wet is a machine that stops earning.

  • Check the tow route and the standing, not just the distance to the dust
  • Lifting bracket from the MSC30 up, where towing is not an option
  • A truck-mounted unit solves access on sites where nothing can be parked
Attendance

Who is going to be standing next to it

Nobody, if it is set up properly — which is what the remote control and the water cut-off valve on every model are actually for.

  • Plan the refill interval around the shift, not around the tank

Fog cannons, answered plainly

How far does a fog cannon actually throw?

Between 10 – 15 m on the smallest MistBeam and 90 – 100 m on the largest, in windless conditions. That last part is not a formality. Throw is the one specification on a fog cannon that the weather can halve, so we publish a band rather than a single number, and we size against the distance you need on a normal day rather than a still one.

What is the difference between a fog cannon and a mist cannon?

Nothing. They are two names for the same machine, and different markets settled on different words — you will also see "mist gun", "dust suppression cannon" and "fogging system". KKE's range is called MistBeam and the models are MSC10 through MSC100.

Do I need chemicals or additives?

No. A MistBeam suppresses with water alone, which is the point of atomising it so finely — the droplet does the work, not a surfactant. Some operators add a binder for haul-road sealing or for very light, hydrophobic dusts, and the machine will pass it, but nothing on this page assumes you will.

Can I hire one instead of buying?

Often the sensible answer for a single project, a demolition phase or a summer of earthworks. The trolley configuration with its own tank and generator is the one that hires well because it can be dropped anywhere a truck reaches and needs nothing from the site. Tell us the duration and we will point you at the right arrangement.

Can it be mounted on a truck?

Yes, and it is one of the more useful things you can do with a water tanker you already run. The cannon, a road washer for haul roads and paved areas, and a water cannon for washing down plant all run off the same tank and pump. Tank size follows your chassis, and road and surface wetting covers roughly 5 to 7 m of width per pass.

Will it work on a crusher or a conveyor transfer point?

On the crusher mouth, the discharge and the product stockpile, yes — a standalone unit on a stand aimed across the discharge is a common installation. Inside a chute or an enclosed transfer house, no: dust generated in a confined space is better dealt with at the source, and a fog cannon aimed into a gallery wets the belt before it wets the dust.

How much water does it use, and can it be recycled water?

Consumption follows the model and how hard you run it; the nozzle count and pump rating in the table above are what it is sized from, and the figure for your configuration comes with the quotation. Settled or recycled site water is usable and often is used — have it tested and filter ahead of the pump, because fine nozzles are far more sensitive to solids than to water quality in any other sense.

We do not publish a price, because the spread across the range is wide enough that a headline figure would mislead nearly everyone who read it — an MSC10 and a truck-mounted MSC100 are not the same purchase.
